As the back-to-school season approaches, families are encouraged to consider health coverage a priority on their preparation list. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicaid provide free or low-cost health coverage for eligible children and teens, helping them stay healthy and ready to learn. Enrollment is open year-round, so families can apply at any time.
Many families may qualify without realizing it. Eligibility varies by state and is based on family income and household size. In most states, children up to age 19 from a family of four earning up to $80,000 per year may be eligible for coverage. In some states, children can still qualify even if family income is higher. This means that even families who think they earn too much might be surprised to find they are eligible.
Health coverage through Medicaid and CHIP offers a range of services that support children’s health throughout the school year. These include annual checkups and school physicals to prepare children to learn, play, and participate; preventive care to identify health needs early; dental care to prevent toothaches and missed school days; vision and hearing services to support learning; mental health care for emotional well-being; prescription medications and treatment; and specialized services for children with disabilities.
“Getting your child covered helps you get them the health care they may need. When a child is sick, the right medicines help them get back to school. If a child has a tough time focusing, there are supports to help. If your child does not see as well as other children, these programs cover glasses,” according to the announcement. Healthy kids are confident kids, ready to participate in every opportunity inside and outside the classroom.
Families can apply for Medicaid and CHIP by phone, mail, or in-person through their state’s Medicaid or CHIP office, or online at InsureKidsNow.gov/coverage. Once enrolled, coverage must be renewed every twelve months, so it is important to keep your address, email, and phone number up to date with your state office to avoid missing renewal information.
