Bradley A. Maron Named New Editor-in-Chief of Circulation Journal, Promising Enhanced Clinical and Patient-Focused Features

The American Heart Association announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has assumed the role of editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal, effective with today’s issue. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004-2016. This appointment underscores the Association's commitment to advancing transformative cardiovascular science, according to Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee.

Maron brings a vision to reinvigorate the journal with enhanced transparency and engaging content. New features include a Clinician Lighthouse article offering expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests and patient management, and a Clinician's Corner providing decision-making guidance for real-world practice. Key clinical trials and guideline manuscripts will be accompanied by perspective bundles for context. The journal will also introduce graphic abstracts for all research articles, central illustrations for invited papers, and video commentaries for select manuscripts. A streamlined submission process promises accelerated and more transparent review timelines.

Notably, a new Patient's Corner article will target the public and patient community, thematically linking to key content such as clinical trials or scientific statements. Expanded weekly eTOC alerts will include brief summaries. These upgrades aim to share findings in more engaging ways, as Maron stated, “Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency.”

Maron’s editorial team includes Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University. Ten deputy editors oversee specific sections: Fundamental Sciences (Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA), Translational Science (Matthew L. Steinhauser, M.D.), Clinical Cardiology (Jennifer E. Ho, M.D., FAHA, and Ryan J. Tedford, M.D., FAHA), Clinical Trials (Adrian F. Hernandez, M.D., M.H.S., FAHA, and P. Gabriel Steg, M.D.), Community Health (Tiffany Powell-Wiley, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA), Population Health (Mercedes Carnethon, Ph.D., FAHA), Global Cardiovascular Health (Ana Mocumbi, M.D., Ph.D.), and AI for Process and Science (Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA). The journal will be supported by 27 associate and guest editors.

Maron, senior associate dean for precision medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center, holds six patents and has co-authored over 260 scientific publications. His research has clarified clinical risk in pulmonary hypertension and advanced network medicine. The American Heart Association’s journals, including Circulation, are editorially independent, ensuring open dialogue essential for scientific discovery.
