New Tool Helps Consumers Spot AI-Generated Health Videos

As more Americans turn to social media and AI-driven platforms for health advice, the Health In Hand Foundation has introduced a new resource to help consumers distinguish between credible health information and AI-generated content. The tool, titled “How to Spot an AI-Generated Health Video,” provides practical guidance for evaluating health videos before liking, sharing, following advice, or making a purchase.

The initiative comes amid growing reliance on digital sources for health information. Recent research indicates that more than one-third of Americans get health information from social media, and 1 in 5 use AI chatbots. Simultaneously, more than half of consumers report difficulty in knowing which sources to trust. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated, some videos are designed to mimic healthcare professionals, medical experts, or trusted wellness influencers, making it harder to differentiate factual information from misleading or fabricated claims.

“Consumers today are navigating a health information environment unlike anything we've seen before. An AI-generated video can look professional, sound credible, and spread to millions of people within hours,” said Mary Leonard, Executive Director of the Health In Hand Foundation. “Our goal is not to make people distrust everything they see online. It's to give them practical tools to ask the right questions, verify sources, and make informed self-care decisions with confidence for themselves and their families.”

The tool begins with three simple questions consumers can ask when evaluating online health content. First, does the video look or sound artificial? Signs such as strange blinking, unusual mouth movements, robotic speech, distorted background text, or unnaturally smooth visuals may indicate AI generation. However, appearance alone is not sufficient to determine trustworthiness. Second, can you verify who is speaking? Consumers should look for a real name, professional credential, or organization and check if the person can be verified outside social media, such as on a clinic, hospital, or professional organization website. Third, what is the video trying to sell? Caution is advised when a video promotes a miracle cure, unrealistic results, or a single urgent solution; health claims should be compared with trusted health sources.

The resource also highlights five red flags that warrant a second look. Videos that appear unnaturally perfect, with faces, voices, or movements that seem slightly off despite polished production, are suspect. Another warning sign is an apparent expert relying on staged visual cues—like a white coat, generic certificates, or vague titles—to create authority without verifiable credentials. Consumers should be wary of messages that promise a cure, suggest replacing current medicine, or guarantee dramatic results with little evidence. Urgency is another red flag; statements such as “limited time” or “act now,” especially paired with immediate purchase links, are pressure tactics rather than indicators of trustworthy information. Finally, dramatic before-and-after results, such as rapid weight loss or instant improvements, may be edited, exaggerated, or fabricated.

As artificial intelligence continues to shape how health information is created and shared, the Health In Hand Foundation is expanding its efforts to help consumers evaluate online content and make safer self-care decisions. The new tool is part of the foundation's broader mission to provide trusted, evidence-based self-care education while helping consumers recognize and avoid misleading health claims online. The “How to Spot an AI-Generated Health Video” tool is available now at HealthInHand.org.
