Dr. Wael Sakr, a prominent figure in pathology and medical education, has announced a national scholarship initiative for undergraduate students pursuing careers in medicine. The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students is now accepting applications from students across the United States who demonstrate academic commitment and a genuine interest in healthcare. The one-time award of $1,000 is designed to help cover educational expenses as recipients continue their path toward becoming medical doctors.
The scholarship reflects Dr. Sakr's professional values, shaped by more than four decades in pathology, medical education, and cancer research. After earning his medical degree at the University of Damascus in Syria, Dr. Sakr completed postgraduate training in the United States, including an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship. He joined Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990, served as Chairman of its Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2022, and became Dean of the school in 2022. His research has focused extensively on prostate cancer, particularly racial disparities affecting African American men, and he has contributed to over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates at accredited colleges or universities and on a pre-med track or otherwise pursuing a career as an MD or DO. They must remain in good academic standing and submit a complete application, including a required essay, by the April 15, 2027 deadline. The essay, 500–750 words, asks applicants to respond to: "Dr. Wael Sakr has spent his career advancing medicine through research, mentorship, and a commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. What draws you to a career in medicine, and how do you hope to make a meaningful impact as a future physician?"
